Journey maps in Traceably help you visualise and optimise customer experiences by breaking down key interactions, insights, and opportunities. This guide explores the core features and functionalities of journey maps.
The journey map page consists of three main tabs:
- Journey Map Tab – The visual representation of the journey, where stages, steps, and content lanes are displayed.
- Content List Tab – A structured list of all content cards included in the journey map. Here, you can:
- Use Filter, Search, and Group features to analyse and organise data.
- Set and manage properties for each card, including Tags, Priority, and Status.
- Create nested groups by dragging and dropping cards within the list.
- Details Tab – Allows you to edit the Journey Map title and Journey description.
Each journey map consists of:
- Stages – High-level phases of the journey (e.g., Awareness, Purchase, Onboarding).
- Steps – Specific touchpoints within each stage that detail customer interactions. Each step can have one persona action.
- Content Lanes – Sections that hold different types of insights and information.
When you create a journey map, it automatically includes:
- Two stages:
- Stage 1 (includes Step 1 and Step 2)
- Stage 2 (includes Step 3)
- Three content lanes:
- Persona Actions – Captures what users/customers do at each step.
- Insights – Stores pain points, observations, and research findings.
- Opportunities – Highlights potential improvements and solutions.
By default, the map is set to the top-left corner of the page. You can navigate and interact with the map using the following controls:
- Zooming: Press

To enable canvas mode, click on the lock icon in the toolbox at the bottom right. This unlocks the map and allows you to move it freely within a virtual canvas.
Adding and Editing Stages & Steps
- Click + icon to add a new journey stage or swimlane.
- Under a stage, click + icon to create steps and define specific moments in each stage.
- Drag and drop stages or steps to reorder them as needed.
Managing Content Lanes
- Add new content lanes to capture different types of information(e.g., risks, solutions, or business architecture elements).
- Expand or collapse lanes for a clearer view.
Creating and moving Content Cards
- Click the + Add button within a content lane to create a new card.
- As you type a card title, a search panel will appear, listing existing cards that match your input.
- To reuse an existing card, select it using the
Up
/Down
arrow keys and pressEnter
, or click the card. - To create a new card, hold

after typing the title, or click + Create option in the search panel.

- Quick Duplicate: To copy an existing card within the same journey map, hold
Alt
/Option
and drag the card to the desired location. - Drag and drop content cards within lanes to organise information efficiently.
- If you open the ellipsis menu in the lane header on the left-hand side and select Change Card Type, you will see a checkbox for "Change card type when inserting".
- When this option is checked, dropping a card into this lane will automatically convert the card to match the lane’s default card type.
- This option is unchecked by default.
Using the Sidedrawer
You can click on any card to open up the sidedrawer, where you can see and manage card properties. The available properties include:
- Card Title – This is the text displayed on the card within the map.
- Priority – Options: Urgent, High, Normal, Low (Customisable for Enterprise Plan customers).
- Status – Options: Hypothesis, Evaluation, Validated, Archive (Customisable for Enterprise Plan customers).
- Description – Additional details about the card.
- Card Links – Displays all other cards that this card is linked to.
- Journeys – Lists all other journey maps in which this card appears.
Deleting and Removing Items
If you need to remove or delete an item, click on the ellipsis at the top right corner of the item and select Delete or Remove.
- Remove – Removes the card from the current journey map, but it remains available in the workspace and can still be used in other journey maps.
- Delete – Permanently deletes the card from the entire workspace, removing it from all journey maps and lists where it was used.
- To delete a card, open the sidedrawer by clicking on the card and then click on the trash icon at the bottom of the sidedrawer.
Card Linking
Within the Journey Map Tab, you can create links between content cards:
- Toggle the Linking feature on using the switch in the top-right corner to enable linking and visually display links as lines connecting cards.
- To create a new link:
- Click the link icon within the card you want to link from – a connection line should appear.
- Move the cursor to the target card and click anywhere on it to establish the link.
- Click a card to open the sidedrawer, where you can:
- View all linked cards.
- Manage and change link types.
Available link types:
- Directional Links: Precedes, Follows, Parent of, Child of (displayed with an arrowhead).
- Non-Directional Links: Dependency to, Depends on, Related to.
Linking to the Journey Framework (Enterprise Plan only)
- To ensure alignment, journey map stages can be linked to predefined Journey Framework stages.
- This allows multiple teams to work on different journey maps while maintaining consistency.
Collaborating with Teams
- Invite team members to view, edit, and contribute to journey maps.
- Use comments and annotations to discuss insights and opportunities.
